This intimate morning walk begins at 6:30. Our first stop is Chion-in Temple — one of Japan’s grandest temples, home to one of the largest wooden gates in Japan — where you’ll witness the daily chanting ritual performed by resident monks, a practice that has continued here for centuries. From there, we visit Yasaka Shrine — serene and unhurried at this early hour, a stark contrast to the crowds that fill it later in the day — before settling into Maruyama Park for a traditional Japanese breakfast served in furoshiki cloth, enjoyed in the peaceful greenery of the park. The second half of the walk takes you deep into the backstreets of Higashiyama — Nene’s Path, Kōdai-ji Temple, the panoramic view over old machiya townhouses, Ninenzaka — finishing at the iconic Yasaka Pagoda as the city finally wakes around you. From there, you’re perfectly positioned to continue on foot to Kiyomizudera at your own pace. Small group. Unhurried pace.
